http://www.sccastartingline.com/_10-things-you-absolutely-positively-have-to-know-about-autocross.php
1. Autocross is Affordable: It is disingenuous to say that any form of motorsports is cheap, and like all forms, how much you spend will almost certainly be dependent upon how fast you want to go. Never the less, autocross is one of the most affordable forms of motorsports competition available. Most people compete in their daily driven cars, entry fees for regional events are generally $25-$35 and consumables are generally limited to tires. If having fun in your car is your priority, you can go a long way on a set of performance street tires and basic automotive maintenance.
2. Safety is Paramount: Over the past 40 years SCCA has built a network of officials, procedures and policies with the singular focus of keeping the sport of autocross as safe as possible. Incidents have happened, but they are extremely rare and personal injuries are even more rare. In 2008, SCCA sanctioned over 300,000 autocross runs with less than 50 of those having an incident of any kind. That works out to roughly one incident for every 7500 runs.
3. ALMOST Anyone Can Autocross: Unless you are under 5 years old, or of legal driving age and without a driver’s license, you can autocross. That’s it, you don’t have to be young, or old, or rich, or even talented. You just need to have a desire to compete in driving events and a vehicle to do it in.
4. Everyone Runs, Everyone Works: Autocross does not have an army of workers who put on events; instead the sport relies upon each competitor to do a work assignment for that event. Assignments can range from resetting course cones to timing and scoring runs, to hauling the equipment trailer to and from events. Not only does this keep the cost of autocrossing low, it also helps to build a community around the sport, everyone drives, everyone works.
5. Autocrossing Will Make You a Better Driver: It doesn’t matter if we are taking about on a track or on the street, the skills you develop autocrossing will make you a better driver. Whether it is familiarity with vehicle dynamics, an understanding of mechanical limitations or a new found respect for the laws of physics, having a place to play means that you will better know what to do in an emergency situation and that you will be more likely to prevent yourself from getting into one in the first place.
6. You Don’t Have to go it Alone: In autocross, each driver is competing against a clock. Because of this, more than one driver can compete in a single car. Normally this is limited to 2 drivers in a car within a single class. However, there are parallel ladies classes, and most cars are eligible for classes in multiple categories. As such, friends and families often go in together to share a car and the cost of autocrossing.
7. You Don’t Need to Buy a Special Car: There is some awesome autocross machinery out there, make no mistake about it. Although, for the vast majority, autocross is done in the same car that gets us to work and brings home the groceries. It is not uncommon to see a child seat or two sitting in a paddock spot, next to the spare tire and floor matts. Some do decide to pick up a car for autocross; many also drive that car to work.
8. It is a Competition: Autocross is a lot of fun. It is a great way to play with cars, hang out with friends and spend time with family, but at the end of the day it is a competition. Some thrive on the thrill of winning, while others use competition as a way to gauge progress. Either way, the fact that the sport is measured to the thousandth of a second means you will know exactly where you stand and after a while, how far you have come.
9. Autocross is a Community: Most activities have a community, made up of the people involved. Once you get involved, you will find autocross to be no different. Autocrossers tend to travel together to out of town events and catch dinner together on the way home. They help one another with car preparation and repairs, even lending parts or offering a co-drive when things do break. Autocrossers do compete, and do so fiercely, but there is a prevailing attitude of sportsmanship and camaraderie that dictates the tone of the sport.
10. Autocross Can be as Big (or as Small) as you want it to be: For some, autocross is something they do a couple of Sundays a year, for others the quest for a championship is their primary life goal. Local regions keep points and award year-end championships for their members. There are National and Pro events throughout the year and the annual national championship event in Lincoln Nebraska each September for those looking for the highest level of competition. No matter what level you are interested in, autocrossing has a place for you to play.
